Harvesting, processing and compiling data methodologyThe 2°C goal of global warming above the pre-industrial temperatures has been internationally accepted as a science-based and politically feasible objective. In the light of this common goal, professors McGlade and Ekins from the University College of London estimated what percentage of fossil fuel reserves are unburnable in order to keep a likely probability (>66%) of maintaining global warming under a 2°C threshold.
All energies mixed up, quantities are expressed in billions of metric tons (Gt). The following conversion rates have been used. One metric ton is equivalent to:
7.33 crude oil barrels (one barrel: 42 US gallons)
1,379 cube meters of natural gas
